This blog originally was intended to be a picture of the day blog; however, it has seemed to morph into a journal of sorts, it is mostly about Hadley and her daily happenings, but since I am writing it- you get a bit of me every once in a while too. I hope you enjoy reading about our lives!

Hadley's birthday celebration

Since Hadley's birthday fell on a weekend that wasn't mine, I decided just to make Friday her birthday here with me. She loves balloons and rainbow colors, so I knew early on whatever we did would be centered around those things. Earlier in the year I was involved in a bible study that was for moms, one of our meetings we discussed traditions and things to do to make holidays special. I tucked in my memory the idea of doing something that would involve waking up surrounded by balloons. I put my own spin on that that and made the hallway a birthday tunnel...it was filled with streamers and balloons and looked like this...

At the end of the tunnel was her big present (a slide) and her wrapped gifts were waiting for her. As soon as she woke up I literally put her in the hall to see all of it- she didn't know what to think!

She got a few books, some clothes, a Dora doll (to go with the boots one she got for Christmas), a baby stroller (from Mary Jean), and some art supplies...she is one lucky girl, she said she liked getting presents, and I bet so within  four days she got a LOT of new stuff. I was happy I could give her a nice birthday and Christmas, we don't buy toys very often, so she is all stocked up now!

I also made rainbow cupcakes, they were rainbow on the inside and even frosted in different colors with rainbow sprinkles. I had a different idea for the sprinkles from a cake I saw on pinterest, but it didn't translate so well to a cupcake so I had to change plans. We sang happy birthday and Hadley blew out her candles...she really liked the cupcakes (and so did I)!

We spent the rest of the day playing with all her new toys. It was just a day all about Hadley- she was the birthday princess (well, when isn't she a princess?!?!). It was good quality time, I think next year we will try to do a party and invite friends and such, but since I wasn't getting to spend her birthday with her I wanted to have a day just us. I still can't believe I have a two year old...

Christmas Review

It's been a good while since I have posted on this blog, but I have been keeping pretty busy between Christmas. Hadley's birthday, and New Year's...

We had a pretty good Christmas, for the most part. Hadley spent the weekend before Christmas with her father, but I got to have her Sunday night to take her to church for the Christmas Eve candlelight service. Last year we were in Humble and visited a church there, it was nice, but I wished I had been at our church, and this year we were. They make the whole building look so pretty. It was a great service with a theme of hope...I liked it a lot. Here are a few photos before church at the house and a few from the church. This was the one day we all got dressed up, so it was nice to catch that on film!

Hadley headed back to her dad's on Christmas Eve, so I spent the day preparing food for Christmas dinner ( I was hoping to put everything together, so I would just have to put stuff in the oven rather than being in the kitchen all day Christmas) and I also went and served in the Parent Pager for the the 4pm Christmas Eve service at church. It was CRAZY to see how many people were at church, I mean it was packed in almost every place people could see- it is great to think that that many people wanted to celebrate the season in a church though!

Hadley got home late that night, so she took a bath and headed to bed so we could get ready for Santa. Her big gifts were a kitchen and a baby bed set. She seemed really excited to see both
She saw those first and kinda seemed uninterested in her stocking or other presents, but with a little persistence, I got her to focus on those too. She got a lot of Dora stuff, including a sing along microphone, some house shoes, a puzzle, some Veggie Tales movies, a baby doll from my friend Mary Jean, and lots of other goodies. So basically this Christmas I made my child a housewife- she has babies to care for and a kitchen to cook in- but she has a ball doing both!!

I made Christmas dinner entirely from recipes on Pintrest. It was pretty good- we had apple stuffed pork loin, green bean bundles, spinach bake, rice pudding (I had never had it and it was pretty good!), baked fruit (that is an old family recipe), and apple pie bites. I also made Pomosas, which was pomegranate juice and champagne...it was all really good! While we were eating it started snowing, so we bundled up and took Hadley outside so she could actually be in snow. The last time it snowed here she was a new born and I was not about to take her out then. She liked running around in it, so much so that she had a full on fit when I took her inside...
Shortly after playing the snow, everyone fell asleep and took a nice nap. It was  nice to have a low key Christmas here, it wasn't fussy...we could lounge around in the afternoon...it was perfect!

Cookies

When I was a kid one of my favorite Christmas time things to do was make and decorate Christmas cookies. I know a lot of people do this and most people do it with icing, but for whatever reason, I didn’t grow up with iced cookies and therefore have never really had the desire to make them that way. Don’t get me wrong I don’t dislike them, it just isn’t what I did growing up, so it isn’t as near to my heart.

I remember every year how much my mom dreaded doing the cookies and I never really understood that, until last night. I came home from work got changed into some comfy clothes and started rolling out the dough. It started out just fine. I was cutting out cookies left and right, Hadley was having a ball putting sprinkles on them- it was all good.

Until, the first batch came out of the oven resembling a huge glob of dough. My nicely cut cookies quadrupled in size and literally every single cookie had joined together, it was like a cookie Pangaea. This bummed me out a little, but my mom said I just needed to roll the dough thinner and that wouldn’t happen. So I did, Hadley was still loving decorating and was doing a great job, no worries. The second batch came out just the same. I don’t know why I am like this, but when I cook or especially bake something, I feel like it HAS to be perfect and I get REALLY mad when it isn’t- it is like I am a failure and I just can’t deal. So I no longer was enjoying the whole process. Hadley was REALLY enjoying decorating, as in she poured an entire shaker of sprinkles atop the cookies, clearly I am the responsible mom that allowed my not even two year old have free reign with sprinkles…but she enjoyed it, so I guess it isn’t a total bad thing.

So we ended up with cookies that mostly just look like blobs, Hadley’s face and hand dyed green from the sprinkles that she just had to eat, and me WORN out. Now I get it, cookies with a small child can be stressful, but guess what we are going to do it every year, because I am all about traditions, perhaps between then and now I will figure out this whole cookie cutter thing, I am telling you a baker I am not….

Hadley had a ball and at the end of the day that was all that mattered. We had a great week of Christmas activities, crafts, and baking, and making memories and that is what is was all about!

Making Christmas memories...

Since Hadley is now at an age that she sort of seems to understand Christmas and such. I have been trying to make a conscious effort to start holiday traditions. Last year I really wanted to get her the Little People Nativity set, but it just got away from me, so this year I knew I had to get it. I think it is a great way to start having conversations about the meaning of Christmas. Since she isn't quite two yet, this year I have just focused on getting her to understand that the baby is baby Jesus, I am not sure how much she gets it, but I have to start somewhere.

On Saturday, we headed to the Wills Point Christmas Parade. We took Hadley last year and it was a cute little parade. I like to get to see my students and the local organizations from the city in which I work. I also knew that the small neighboring town, Elmo, would have an Elmo in the parade, and while that meant little to Hadley last year I KNEW she would GO CRAZY this year. I was right she did, she squealed in delight, which was shortly squelched by the Santa riding two fire trucks behind him. As Santa passed us, she quickly hid her face in my shoulder and grabbed on for dear life. Overall Hadley's favorite part was picking up candy and putting in her bag. She hadn't really had candy before, and I made the mistake of letting her have a piece, now EVERYDAY since she asks for candy...I guess a piece a day won't hurt, right?!?!

As I have already mentioned, Hadley has had her first trip to Santa this year, that didn't go as well as I had planned. She seemed to like Santa, just wasn't interested in sitting on his lap. So this past Sunday after church I had the idea to try again at the Bass Pro Shop. When we got there we were told there was a two hour wait to see Santa...umm, no thank you. So instead we walked around. Hadley saw Santa from afrar, but immediately said "No Santa!" They had some reindeer that she enjoyed petting and a huge snowman I thought we could take her picture by. Immediately she screamed the loudest scream I have ever heard out of her and exclaimed "No, snowman!!!" Being the "smart" mom I am, I thought I would divert her attention by showing her a huge stuffed bear (I thought she would like it because she likes to say bear growl and then she growls, well that not a good idea! She screamed again, and kept saying over and over "No Santa, no snowman, no bears..." (that was the first thing out of her mouth the following morning- luckily I am a counselor, I might have scared my child!). She did like watching the fish so we spent about 20 minutes doing that, she seemed really impressed by the huge catfish!

Also earlier in the week, I had created a video message from Santa (it was free and awesome, moms you should look into it). Hadley seemed to enjoy hearing her personalized message from Santa. It allowed me to pick something that she had been working hard on this year to highlight (saying please and thank you). I picked the option for the nice/naughty child- I wanted to keep it real!

Monday night, we headed to Athens to the Land of Lights. I had never been before and had heard it was pretty good. When we lived in Athens we traveled to the one in Lindale, because I was told it was AMAZING and of course I have been to the one in College Station many times (I am still determined to get Hadley to that one this year!) They had a three hour wait over the weekend, but I heard that Monday was a slow day, so as soon as my mom got home from work, we loaded up and headed out. We got there at 6:15, there was no wait at all, in fact NO ONE was there. IT was perfect. We were able to take our time. At first Hadley seemed a little scared, but a few moments in she really seemed to have a ball. I thought it was pretty good, much better than  I was expecting!

Last night, we did our first Christmas craft and made Santa ornaments out of Hadley's hand print. It was a cute idea I saw on Facebook and Pintrest and was really happy with how cute it came out, it might be fun to do each year so we can see how much she has grown. The next couple nights we will be doing some Christmas baking. I am excited to try a new recipe I found on pinterest for Christmas goodies (I was late to Pintrest, because I was afraid I would be addicted, and I was right)!

Here are a few random pictures I came across and hadn't posted yet. For Hadley's birthday pictures we had balloons and for a good while she was obsessed with them, they were all she wanted to play with. In fact, when she sees the pictures with the balloons in them she gets all sad and asks for her balloons, guess I know what I need to have handy for her birthday! I also wanted to point out the adorable zebra flannel pj's they are adorable and SO Hadley.

While we were in Humble for Thanksgiving, while cleaning out the attic, someone came across a pair of my old tap shoes. Hadley loved putting them on and hearing the "tap, tap, tap" as she took each step- I am telling you dance lessons are happening SOON!!

Weekend update

This weekend felt really long, which was nice. On Friday after Hadley went to sleep, I headed out to meet up with a few girlfriends, but most importantly to meet a new guy in one of their lives. It was nice to go somewhere; I hadn’t done that in a while.

Saturday morning we took Hadley to get Santa pictures. One of the moms of a former student has a photography studio. She does Santa pictures every year. I like this for many reasons. One, the Santa she hires has a real bear and everything he looks like Santa. Two, it is the same Santa every year so it is like a tradition to get her photo with the same one. Three, and most importantly, I like that it is in a studio, there aren’t people waiting in line, when Hadley decides to have a meltdown, which is inevitable, it isn’t as embarrassing. She wouldn’t get on Santa’s lap- at all. In my mind I was ready for every possibility of her reaction, but for whatever reason I didn’t anticipate her clinging to me for dear life. It took a while to get her to even go near him. Through some rather creative tactics, we were able to get a cute one of her close to Santa. It makes for a good picture and good display of who Hadley really is.

After pictures, she went to see her father and my mom and I picked up a few small things for the house and Christmas and went home to clean, and I might have snuck in a little nap. Sunday was the norm, got up, dropped Hadley off, headed to church, heard a great message, worked parent pager, did some grocery shopping and headed home. We bought a little baby bed set for Hadley and I wanted to put it together to see what it actually looked like- that dang thing took about an hour to put together…it was crazy. When Hadley got home she noticed my mom and I both had freshly painted toes (I have a cute color called cocktail dress, it is black with red glitter) and insisted on having her toes painted. I don’t paint my own toes, I just don’t do a good job, so I knew I couldn’t paint Hadley’s- so my mom did it. Surprisingly she sat really still and let her do it and was so happy when it was done. Look at her cute little pink toes (would it be any other color???)
